Petrified Opinions

Loyalty to petrified opinions never yet broke a chain or freed a human soul in this world — and never will. Mark Twain, “Consistency”

On Walls

“Something there is that doesn’t love a wall, that wants it down,” Robert Frost wrote. As I write this, our government is shut down because the only President we’ve got* wants a wall, or at least something he can pretend is a wall, up. It puzzles me that over a third of the country still sees him in a favorable light. “He moves in darkness as it seems to me.” I was never much of a fan of Ronald Reagan, but at least his goal was Morning in America. I’m afraid we’re a long way from dawn.

*And boy, could we use Molly Ivins right now.
