Sinclair Lewis said that it’s difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it. Miles’ law puts it a little differently, but comes to the same conclusion–where you stand depends on where you sit. I was raised on Twain, so I always liked his take: You tell me where a man gits his corn-pone, and I’ll tell you what his ‘pinions is.
