Disappointed in the Monkey

I believe that our Heavenly Father invented man because he was disappointed in the monkey.
Mark Twain, Autobiographical Dictation

I was raised on the King James Bible and the writings of Mark Twain, and I’m here to tell you that a childhood spent reading Job, Jeremiah, The War Prayer, and The United States of Lyncherdom won’t leave you with an overly generous opinion of humanity. But I also was raised by a family that loved to laugh, and especially loved to laugh with and at each other around the dinner table, where we learned from experience the truth of Twain’s promise that “against the assault of Laughter nothing can stand.”

This effort at a blog is a weird amalgamation of those influences, of both the ways that people continue to disappoint and the ways we eat and laugh and carry on. In Cornpone Opinions, I offer my occasional thoughts on what’s going on in the world of politics (Petrified Opinions) and organized religion (Soul Butter and Hogwash). In Expecting David, I hope to talk about the law, not just when it seems to be going wrong (A Fool on Average) but also the times that, against all odds, things work out (To Fight for Another). Finally, family have always kept me Well Fed, from the comfort food of childhood (All the Comforts of Home) and holidays (Home for the Holidays) through the changes that come with cooking in the age of quinoa (Evolution).
